OH fingerprinting guide

How to get fingerprinted
in Ohio.

The right process depends on who requested your fingerprints and why. Use this guide to confirm the method before you book.

Start with the requesting organization.

Ask the employer, licensing board, agency, school, or other recipient for its current written instructions. Do not assume that a process used for one purpose in Ohio will work for another.

Four questions to answer before your appointment

  1. 01

    Who is receiving the fingerprints?

Identify the agency and the exact license, job, record request, or program.

  2. 02

    Which capture method is required?

Confirm whether the recipient requires an approved electronic submission, an FD-258 or agency-specific card, or another channel.

  3. 03

    What reference information is required?

Ask for any ORI number, service code, employer code, reason-fingerprinted entry, or supplied form.

  4. 04

    Who submits the completed fingerprints?

Verify whether you, the fingerprinting provider, or the requesting organization handles submission.

Common fingerprinting paths in Ohio

State licensing or employment

Many state programs direct applicants to a specific authorized process. Follow the agency’s current instructions and approved-provider rules.

Fingerprint cards

Federal, out-of-state, immigration, and private requests may use an FD-258 or another specified card. Confirm the card and required fields.

FBI identity history

A federal identity-history request is different from many state checks. Confirm the accepted FBI submission route for your purpose.

Out-of-state requirements

If your fingerprints are being sent to another state, the receiving state’s agency instructions usually determine the method and format.
